Artisan Smoked Eel Crafted in East Devon and Celebrated by Michelin‑Starred Chefs
Meadowland Smokery is a family‑owned artisan smokery based at Meadowland Farm near Colyton, just a few miles from the Devon coastline. First established in 2017 as the Devon Eel Company by Neil Fuzzard, the business has carved out a national reputation for producing some of the finest smoked eel in the UK, now supplied to over 50 Michelin‑starred restaurants. 

A Legacy Rooted in Fish Farming & Trade
Meadowland Smokery’s story is built on decades of experience. Before founding the Devon Eel Company, Neil Fuzzard spent more than 15 years working closely with the Dutch Eel Company, learning the traditional artisan smoking techniques and trading relationships that would later form the backbone of Meadowland Smokery. In 2018, Neil officially took over the Dutch operation following their retirement, ensuring continuity of knowledge, methods and standards. 
The business operates alongside Frontfish UK, Neil’s earlier venture, founded in 1996, originally specialising in premium carp breeding for the angling and food markets. This deep understanding of fish husbandry and quality control underpins every product Meadowland Smokery produces.

Father‑and‑Son Craftsmanship
Today, Meadowland Smokery is run by Neil alongside his son Ben Fuzzard, who joined the business full‑time in early 2021. A trained chef, Ben brings professional kitchen experience and a clear understanding of chefs’ expectations, flavour balance and presentation. Since joining, he has expanded the smokery’s creative scope while maintaining strict traditional standards.

Smoked eel remains Meadowland Smokery’s flagship product, prized for its: Delicate, refined smokiness, Clean, balanced flavour, Silky texture, The exact smoking process remains a closely guarded trade secret, refined over years of experimentation and traditional practice. The results have earned Meadowland Smokery an exceptional reputation across the UK’s fine‑dining scene. 
Products are available as fillets, portions or whole eels, supplied wholesale to chefs and select retailers, as well as online for discerning home cooks. Meadowland Smokery’s craftsmanship has been recognised by respected regional food awards, reflecting not only flavour and technique but also consistency, safety and provenance.

Despite its rural East Devon setting, Meadowland Smokery supplies some of the most prestigious kitchens in the country, with its smoked eel appearing on menus nationwide. The business balances small‑scale, artisan production with professional distribution, ensuring quality is never compromised.
