Seasonal Estate Dining in a Restored Devon Country House Setting
Shilstone Restaurant & Café forms the culinary heart of Shilstone House, a lovingly restored Grade II listed Georgian manor house set within a 500‑acre working estate near Ivybridge and Modbury in South Devon. Offering a café, restaurant dining and seasonal outdoor cooking, Shilstone delivers a food experience rooted in Britain’s seasons, Devon’s producers and a strong sense of place.

A Working Estate with Food at Its Core
Shilstone is a family‑run estate that has been carefully restored over more than two decades, blending architecture, gardens, craft and food into a single destination. The restaurant and café sit within a wider landscape of walled gardens, kitchen gardens, woodland and farmland, which guide menu development and inspire the chefs.

The Café at Shilstone
The Shilstone Café is located in a flower‑filled courtyard, designed with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Open Wednesday to Sunday, it serves a modern British all‑day menu focused on simple, seasonal cooking.
Café Menu Highlights
  • Breakfasts and brunch dishes
  • Light lunches and weekly seasonal specials
  • Homemade cakes and pastries
  • Traditional afternoon tea
  • Coffee and teas served throughout the day
Much of the café seating is indoors and outdoors, with furniture handcrafted on the estate, reinforcing Shilstone’s artesanal ethos.

Restaurant Dining: The Barn
For evening dining, The Barn at Shilstone House offers a more formal restaurant experience in a beautifully restored 18th‑century barn. Open for dinner Thursday to Saturday, and for Sunday lunch, the restaurant serves nostalgic British dishes, elevated through careful technique and exceptional ingredients from local farmers and growers.
Menus change with the seasons and often feature produce grown or raised on the estate itself.

The Fire Shed – Wood‑Fired Courtyard Dining
During the warmer months, Shilstone also opens The Fire Shed, a wood‑fired outdoor restaurant located in the café courtyard.
  • Cooking is done over hot coals using wood from the estate
  • Menus focus on local meats, garden vegetables and sharing dishes
  • Dining is informal and social, with drinks, music and occasional live events
The Fire Shed adds a dynamic, seasonal dimension to Shilstone’s food offer and reinforces the estate’s connection between land, fuel and food.

Local Drinks & Suppliers
Shilstone champions Devon producers throughout its food and drink offering. Drinks showcased include Luscombe soft drinks, Salcombe Brewery beers and cider, and Sandford Orchards cider, alongside thoughtfully selected wines.
The kitchen team works closely with local farmers, growers and estate suppliers, ensuring menus reflect availability and freshness rather than fixed formats.

Visitor Experience Beyond the Table
Shilstone Restaurant & Café is designed to be more than somewhere to eat. Visitors are encouraged to:
  • Explore gardens, woodland and estate walks
  • Attend house and garden tours hosted by the owner
  • Enjoy workshops, talks and seasonal food events
  • Visit with dogs (welcome in outdoor café areas)
Food is central to the experience, but always part of a wider connection to landscape, history and craft.
