The Cheese Shed
Member Overview
Established in 2006, The Cheese Shed specialises in the great artisan cheeses from our region:  the English Westcountry. Almost all the cheeses we sell come from the four counties of Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset. Alongside the cheese, we also sell a wide range of products to eat and drink with it - all manner of crackers, chutneys, salami, beer, cider, wine etc.

Beginning as an online mail order only, we opened a shop in our hometown of Bovey Tracey in 2021. Uniquely in the region, the entire shop is temperature and humidity-controlled, with whole cheeses stacked high on the counter and on floor-to-ceiling shelves - making a very different experience for customers to that provided by a conventional delicatessen. More recently we have opened a small licensed cafe in our courtyard and barn where we offer extraordinary cheese toasties year-round and platters in the summer.

We were founded by Ian Wellens, with a background in music and education, and James Mann, part of the Mann family whose shop had been in Bovey high street since 1827. Pioneers in online cheese retailing, we like to think of ourselves as a modern business with deep roots.

Moving from online to having a ‘regular’ bricks-and-mortar shop as well, we did things ‘the opposite way around’ to many businesses, but in 2021 the time was right, and we are very proud of our premises in Station Road. Here, we are able to interact directly with customers and share our enthusiasm for cheese, and we work very much by offering tasters, in the firm belief that talking about cheese only takes you so far. Adding the courtyard - and the toasties - was another new dimension for The Cheese Shed when we started in 2024, but is one that feels very important as we love welcoming people onto the site, with the element of conviviality which that affords us.

What else do we offer? Advice on all things cheese (and especially Westcountry cheese) related; we have been specialists in cheese wedding cakes since the idea first emerged in the early 2000s; we can do talks when asked; we can advise and/or provide cheese for all sorts of events For other local food and drink businesses, we always interested in hearing about new products, so if you have one that might work for us - let us know. We are also open to the possibility of collaborating; just get in touch.
