Celebrating British Lager, Brewed Beautifully in Mid‑Devon
Utopian Brewing is an independent craft lager brewery based in the hamlet of Clannaborough Barton, Bow, near Crediton. Their mission is simple yet distinctive: to celebrate incredible British lager, brewed the traditional way, using 100% British‑grown ingredients and a deeply sustainability‑focused ethos. Founded in 2018 by Rich Archer, with Head Brewer Jeremy Swainson joining later that year, Utopian transformed two former farm buildings into a state‑of‑the‑art lager brewery. Their first beer was released in March 2019, marking the beginning of a new Devonian brewing success story.
A British Approach to Classic Lager Styles
Utopian Brewing takes inspiration from the Arts & Crafts movement—valuing craftsmanship, sustainability, and the importance of skilled artisans over machines. Following this philosophy, they brew: 100% British lagers, using only UK‑grown hops and malts. While interpreting classic global lager styles through a uniquely British lens. To achieve authentic lager character using British ingredients, Utopian collaborated with Warminster Maltings to develop lower‑modified malts similar to those used in Bavaria and Bohemia, enabling depth, drinkability and clean, precise lager profiles.
Award‑Winning Core Range & Seasonal Specialities
Brewing only lagers (with occasional limited cask ales), Utopian has developed a collection of four award‑winning core lagers. A growing rotation of seasonal and special releases, from premium Helles‑inspired lagers to the rare Černé Speciální (Black Lager). Their beers are known for being: Clean, Easy‑drinking, Technically precise, Vegan across the full range. Utopian is now stocked in pubs, bars, and bottle shops across the UK, with a strong customer base in the South West.
